Political New Year’s Wishes

On New Year’s Eve, my family always follows the tradition of eating twelve grapes, one at a time, and making a wish per grape. The wishes are supposed to involve something we want to accomplish during the upcoming year. If I make twelve political wishes tonight, this is what they’d be:

  1. For a special election to allow the people of Illinois and not a corrupt governor to chose the state’s next senator.
  2. For the appointment of a former president’s daughter and current senator’s niece (with no significant political experience) to the Senate seat currently held by a former president’s wife (who had no significant experience when she won the seat), further proving the Democratic Party is the party of nepotism.
  3. For the selection of a competent, innovative, and risk-taking Republican to the RNC Chairmanship who is ready to modernize our party and broaden our base.
  4. For moderate Congressional Republicans to drive a wedge between President Obama and the more leftist Congressional members of his party, creating an obvious divide on the left and a few good bills on climate change and immigration.
  5. For Nancy Pelosi to keep being Nancy Pelosi so that wish #4 is possible. For her and Harry Reid to remember how much they don’t really get along.
  6. For Republicans to stand up for free-trade during tough economic times so we don’t have a repeat of the Hoover Administration.
  7. For President Obama to use some of that global popularity and clout of his to get global cooperation for solutions to the crises in Gaza, Zimbabwe, Congo, and the Pakistani-Indian border.
  8. For the mainstream media to rediscover its true purpose (meaning not serving as the propaganda wing of the new administration) and for a new Tim Russert to hold all our leaders accountable for their words and deeds. Boy, do I miss Tim Russert.
  9. For no scandals to derail the Republican comeback.
  10. For Republican governor’s to govern their states efficiently despite the budget shortfalls, providing an example of what effective Republican governance looks like.
  11. For Republicans to find a way to become “cool” again on campuses around the country.
  12. For as little talk of the 2012 presidential election as possible.

Happy New Year’s to all!
